Ludington At A Glance

Ludington has been rated by AAA Michigan as one of the top vacation destinations in the state when traveling by car, and it’s no wonder why. From rolling sand dunes and beautiful beaches to historic homes and lighthouses to a charming collection of shops and eateries, there is something for everyone in Ludington. With so many things to do, you’ll want to make visits to the Ludington area an annual adventure.

Among the places to go and things to see is Historic White Pine Village. The village features restored or recreated buildings preserving Mason County’s long history on a 23-acre site overlooking Lake Michigan.

As the home port of the S.S. Badger carferry, Ludington celebrates its maritime heritage with an annual Carferry Festival in June offering activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Fishing in Mason County is world class, from spending a day on Lake Michigan in a charterboat to fly fishing in the Pere Marquette River. Or for those who enjoy the water but don’t want to take a rod with them, miles of sandy beaches offer plenty of room for sunbathing and swimming. The Pere Marquette River and inland lakes scattered throughout the county provide a place to canoe, kayak, swim and soak up the sun. The shoreline offers some of the most beautiful marinas in the state, providing a safe oasis for our boating visitors.

The area also boasts two historic Lighthouses – one at the end of the north pier off of Stearns Park’s public beach, and Big Sable Point Lighthouse, built in 1867. Visitors can tour Big Sable Point Lighthouse after a 1.5-mile walk along a landscape of scenic sand dunes and aged pines – or during designated days during the summer, a bus is available to shuttle visitors from the State Park to the lighthouse.

While in the area, don’t forget to walk through the downtown and browse the many shops, hunt for the perfect souvenirs, and admire the Victorian-style homes tucked beneath a canopy of trees along Ludington Avenue.

Sunsets viewed from the shoreline or the north breakwater are amazing. Hundreds of residents and visitors gather along the shoreline every evening to watch as daylight fades and the sun appears to sink into Lake Michigan. Night after night and season after season the sunsets display a canvas of color providing some of the most breathtaking backdrops for special family vacation photos.

Whether your vacation includes Camping, Golf, Shopping, Fishing or any number of other activities, once you visit Ludington you’re sure to be hooked! You and your family will want to make the Ludington area an annual visit.
